| How to call Japan on D-STAR |
Callsign Routing
In July 2009, there was improvement in the link between the US and Japan
TRUST servers which has made callsign routing (One-Touch reply) available.
Specify the callsign you want to call in the UR field of your radio (or
press One-Touch), and you are all set. You don't have to know which repeater
your party is listening to now. The D-STAR gateways will take care of everything
for you whereever your party is located. However there still is a chance
of failure depending on the timing. If callsign routing does not work,
and if you know which repeater your party is listening to, you might want
to try gateway routing, described below, which was the only way before
the improvement and still works well today.
Gateway Routing
This used to be the only way until July 2009 with which JA stations and
others could communicate over the D-STAR network because of the difference
of the gateway systems used in Japan and the rest of the world. However
it still works well, sometimes more reliably than Callsign Routing. Here,
you specify the repeater callsign which your party is listening to, instead
of your party's callsign directly. This is reliable, but a downside is,
as you can imagine, that you need to know which repeater your party in
on beforehand.
- Determine a repeater and module to call (e.g., JP1YJX module A)
- Set the repeater callsign (e.g., /JP1YJXA) as your destination (to UR or
YOUR depending on your radio)
- Call CQ or an individual station. Please do not forget to say your repeater
callsign you are on.
- Wait for a response with a bit of patience. Please give us some time to
set your repeater callsign to our radios.
When you respond to a CQ call from Japan, please specify his/her repeater
as your destination callsign (UR or YOUR of your radio) just like described
above.
